As we wrap up another successful tax season, we would like to thank you for your commitment to our VITA customers. The coalition and the community depend on your hard work and dedication, and we truly appreciate all your time and effort.

On behalf of our team, we would like to invite you and a guest to the 2011 VITA on Saturday, May 21, from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, VA. Children are also welcome.

Musical entertainment and lunch will be provided. IRS and Site Coordinator certificates will be handed out along with a few VITA volunteer gifts.

Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m.; Wednesdays, 3-7 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Falls Church SkillSource Center will be open for tax preparation on Monday, April 18 from 6-9 p.m. Certain restrictions will apply that day: 2010 electronic returns only. No prior year returns, no paper returns, no ITIN applications. Tax payers are reminded to bring their social security cards or ITIN letters (including for dependents), photo IDs and relevant documents. If filing a joint return BOTH spouses must be present. For taxpayers lacking proper documents, we will prepare and send a “request for extension” to the IRS, after which they will have to find a paid preparer at a later date.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, locally known as the Northern Virginia CASH Campaign – Creating Assets, Savings and Hope -relies on volunteers to deliver free tax preparation services at no cost to working families and individuals in our community. The CASH Coalition is ready to begin recruiting volunteers to serve as site coordinators, greeters/screeners, interpreters, IT support and tax preparers.

HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Last year, volunteers donated approximately 13,200 hours of their time and helped low-income families in Northern Virginia receive over $5.5 million in federal tax refunds. The average VITA recipient received $1,532 in federal tax refunds and $1,797 in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). In total, volunteers helped more than 3,700 families prepare their taxes.

CASH Counts Expo: June 19, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

As part of the Northern Virginia CASH (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) Campaign , Fairfax County will host the 2010 Foreclosure Fair & Family Finance Expo – “Cash Counts” – on Saturday, June 19, from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Fairfax County Government Center. This is a free event, but registration is required.

Through partnerships with lenders, personal finance experts, banks, consumer protection agencies, and community-based groups, the expo will enable county residents to access the tools and expertise they need to recover from financial crisis and mortgage distress. HUD-certified counselors will be available to discuss loan modification and housing assistance options, including the newly launched Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives (HAFA) program. The expo will also feature free credit reports, the opportunity to receive $50 for opening a new bank account, and one-on-one personal finance counseling.

Over 2,500 jobseekers and prospective entrepreneurs are expected. Employers from various industry sectors will be participating – offering a wide range of career opportunities in such areas as finance, sales, business services, and federal, state and local governments.

The event will also feature workshops offering job seeker assistance presented by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and Monster®. Additional workshops include “Get Cash Quick for Teens: Tips for Getting a Summer Job,” “How to Start a Business,” and “Why Credit Matters.”

This is money taxpayers can use to make their lives a little easier now or money they can put away for a rainy day. With a simple check of a box, taxpayers can convert their income tax refunds into I Savings Bonds.
